If you’ve ever wanted to try, or are a fan of river fish then Halra Bor might be the right place for you. With specialty dishes that are exclusive to river fish of Hungary, you will be surprised at the flavorful taste each of these unknown recipes offer.
What To Expect
Having opened in 1994, Halra Bor has welcomed hundreds, if not thousands of guests from around the world since that time. The restaurant which is located right on the shore of the Tisza River in the wine capital of Hungary, Tokaj, offers guests a peaceful and scenic view of the water as they enjoy their respective dishes.
The restaurant not only offers views of the restaurant, but also boat rides on it as well. I was fortunate enough to get to experience said boat ride while visiting the well-known wine town, and swiftly upon exiting the boat, got to enjoy some of their food in the restaurant as well.
The fish soup – one of Hungary’s most famous dishes, also known in Hungarian as Halászlé – pleasantly surprised me. While I’m not generally a fan of the popular soup, their version of it was spot on perfect and the flavors quite nice.

Their fish ‘n chips was a version few have probably heard of: carp instead of cod, with a new spin on tartar sauce instead of the traditional dip. But my favorite dish by far that day was the Cigánypecsenye – Gypsy Steak.
Essentially, what you will find here is what I would essentially call “river pub food”. While you’re going to have your fill of fish, you’re also going to have your fill of fried foods that are prepared in Hungarian style.
