Rákóczi Pince – Tokaj, Hungary

Tokaj, the famous wine region of Hungary, has an unknown history of its vineyards, similarly to Hungarian history in general. While it is not known exactly how long the vines have been flourishing in the soil, known today as Magyarország (Hungary), it is said that the first Aszú wine was created in 1630. According to Wikipedia, the grapes that grow on the volcanic soil in the region are said to date even prior to the first Hungarian tribes settling on the land.

Having said all that, the wines are old. And with that being said, it’s even more astounding to realize that Rákóczi Pince is said to be the oldest wine cellar in all of Tokaj.

My time visiting the wine cellar was quite unique, and not a little foreboding when I first walked in – as it resembled the interior of Dracula’s dungeon. But once Catherine, my hostess for the afternoon greeted me, I was left feeling calm and at ease. Especially when I discovered she was American!

One of the most interesting and noteworthy things about Rákóczi, is that not only is it apparently the oldest wine cellar in Tokaj, but since new ownership in 2008, it has become 100% organic based. Which for so many of us, is a tremendous fact to learn. Ranging from completely dry furmints, to completely sweet, Rákóczi offers a plethora of choices for your unforgettable wine tasting.

The wines are bold, fresh, and of course delicious! Prices, at least in 2018 when I visited, were averaging around 3,700 Hungarian forint per bottle, which is $9.31 USD.

From an American perspective, you can’t even walk into a Whole Foods and buy a subpar bottle from California for that little!

All in all, your experience at Rákóczi Pince will not be disappointing. And if you’re wondering where they’re located, they are right in the center of town on Kossuth tér.
