La Bor Bistro & Boutique Hotel – Tokaj, Hungary

Out of all the places I’ve had the privilege to stay, eat and visit, this is one of the most memorable. Not because it was a super fancy 5-star luxury hotel, or because I had room service or beachside massages. In fact, it’s one of the least likely places you would think would be at the top of my favorite places that I’ve ever stayed.

But La Bor Bistro & Boutique Hotel was indeed a gem when I had the opportunity to visit in 2018.  The staff was very friendly, the food beyond amazing, and the décor perfectly stylish and elegant with a warm and cozy note.  The accommodations not just comfortably delicious, but also gave off a sense of safety and an “at home” ease that few places can pull off.

Starting with the bistro, the food was orchestrated by what would appear and taste to be Michelin star chefs in the kitchen. With presentations which were show-stopping, and the creative flavors that would blow your mind, the classic Hungarian dishes I ordered and tried were some of the best I’d ever partaken of in the country.

The wine, of course, is a must, given that you are in one of the most coveted wine capitals in all the world. La Bor (the name which is a clever combination of French and Hungarian, “la” meaning “the” and “bor” meaning “wine”) gives you an ample selection of the very thing you’re probably already in Tokaj to try.

The boutique hotel has everything you could possibly desire for a cozy, yet upgraded version of a budgeted inn. It has perfect mattresses, bedding, bathroom amenities, shower, and even a view from your window of the town center.

The location is smack dab in the middle of Tokaj, making it a perfect spot for you to wander about the 11 square mile radius that is the white wine capital of Hungary.

And if you’re not interested in roaming about while on a romantic getaway, perhaps the little inn is perfect for having leisurely days in the room, and enjoying a delicious lunch or dinner just downstairs. Don’t forget to try their desserts – you can’t leave without tasting that kind of heaven.

My stay here was genuinely one of my favorites of my life. Coupled with laid back, yet professional staff, anyone would be fortunate to experience what La Bor offers.

Tokaj is calling, and when you’re there, you’ll want to stay at La Bor, or at the very least, try out their bistro. Just make sure that when you visit, you let them know that Lisa sent you!
