Péter Pincészet- Tokaj, Hungary

With so many wine cellars to choose from in the white wine capital of Hungary, why visit Péter Pincészet? Because it might just be the best of them all. But you’ll just have to visit to find out…

Given that there are 3,000 wine cellars in all of Tokaj, it’s no wonder so many tourists flock to the tiny town annually. Not just for festivals (although those are a big draw), Tokaj is a charming cobblestoned street lain town, first documented in 1353. Needless to say, it has a past and a history, just as many of the wine cellars do.

Péter Pincészet is a very accessible cellar for any newbie in town to find. Exactly across the street from the town’s train station, it’s advised not to jump across the train tracks to make it inside! Instead, you can walk casually in a semi-circle to arrive, which will only take you 5-10 minutes depending on your speed of foot.

Péter Pincészet, just like the town it’s located in, is a very charming little establishment. Feel free to stop in (though it’s advised to make a reservation in advance, especially during the busy season), and have as much wine to taste as you like.

Though I had the opportunity to visit several wineries throughout the 15 years I lived in eastern Hungary, I must say that Péter Pincészet was my favorite of all the cellars. Not so much for its venue, but for the wine itself. The exceptional quality, care and service were all a part of the experience, and I would love to go back one day.

The sweet Aszú is of unmatched standard, and I wouldn’t just recommend this place, I would insist that any foreigner, or even local, go here for an afternoon or evening tasting. And of course, the tour of the cellar itself is a fun experience- one that shouldn’t be overlooked while here, either.

Altogether, Péter Pincészet is the cellar you need to mark at the top of your list while in eastern Hungary. Just remember that when you book your tasting, you let them know that Lisa sent you!
