Where 13th Century History Meets Award-Winning Wine in Tokaj
With several family estates, Szerelmi Pince in Tokaj offers you a broad selection of white wines, be it sweet, dry or anything in between. One of the many hundreds of cellars in Tokaj, I had the opportunity of visiting them and getting to taste several of their wines during the wine festival in 2018. The family’s estates spanning over several parts of the region known primarily for wine, they are located in Erdőbénye, Bodrogkisfalud, Bodrogkeresztúr and Tarcal. With approximately 10 hectares of vineyards in total, their wines are versatile and distinct.
Traditional Winemaking Meets Historic Cellars
Quoting them from their website, “Fermentation and storage of the wine must take place primarily in oak barrels, in accordance [as is the historical practice]. This is how our wines get the uniformly oxidative color and flavor that is difficult to confuse with the wines of other wine regions.” In business since 1998, Szerelmi Pince stands out among other wine cellars for more than one reason. Of particular note, one of their cellars out of which they operate has 25,000 liters worth of wine, and dates back to the 13th century. And if you’re interested in knowing just how many distinctive wines they carry, here they are: furmint, linden, yellow muscat, fat grape, kabar and zéta.

Extensive Wine Selection and Vintage Collection
“The cellar produces wines of various degrees of dryness and preparation methods, from dry and semi-dry to semi-sweet, sweet, and January-harvested wines. [All the way] up to aszú. The assortment is also expanded by the fact that there are many vintage wines in the cellar, from 1-2 year old wines to 20-30 year old vintage items,” their website goes on to note. I had a splendid time tasting all their varieties at the wine festival, and wouldn’t mind another round!
