Don Juan Corner Cafe – Vancouver, Washington, USA

Everything at the Don Juan Corner Cafe will give you the longing to come back for more… especially their guacamole…

In the spring of 2015, the doors to Don Juan Corner Café in Vancouver, Washington opened. The head chef, Juan, who was born and raised in Pueblo, Mexico moved to the quiet town of Vancouver in search of a peaceful place to realize his dream – which was to start a family-run restaurant. His son, who is the manager and all-around go-to-person at the restaurant is always happy to greet customers with a smile and explain their homemade cuisine in great detail.

Just a few of their specialties include Mole Poblano, Birria de res, and Barbacoa de borrego estilo “Hidalgo”. The latter of which I tasted, and am here to attest to its incredible flavor and texture. The lamb is so tender in fact, it basically dissolves on your tongue. And after hearing the intricate and long process of how they prepare this particular meat, it’s no wonder how incredible it tastes by the time you’re ready to eat it!

And while their lamb is more than noteworthy, it’s their prompt, efficient, and very detailed service to their guests that leaves you more than impressed. The warmth of the staff make you feel like family rather than guests at a little corner café.

All of their food is fantastic. In particular, I would have another plate of their nachos, or their carne asada con camarones (a.k.a. steak with shrimp).

Their margaritas are quite the sight to see, and their refried beans and salsa are nothing to sniff at either. But, the greatest thing that they serve here has to be their signature guacamole. As I had loads of the stuff while I was Stateside and partook of several different types in many different restaurants, this was by far and away the best!  The ingredients they used in this particular recipe were amazing and met my pallet with much delight.

The beer they have on stock is imported Mexican, and you can have your pick from their wide selection!

Lastly, don’t judge a book by its cover, or in this case, a restaurant by its budget-style appearance. The food is what you’re coming here for, and you won’t regret it!

Seriously though, eat their guacamole.

Just make sure that when you do stop in, you let them know that Lisa sent you!
