Don’t leave this restaurant without ordering their tasty chocolate cake with mascarpone cream. That’s an order!
The Restaurant and Pizzeria
Ristorante Pizzeria Il Portico has a few things to offer that you might be very excited to hear. For example, they are located right near the center of Bologna, which makes grabbing some lasagna easy when you’re already in town. The service is some of the most friendly in the city, and you will most definitely want to order some of their chocolate cake with marscarpone cream before you leave. You won’t regret it!
While the restaurant is 7 years old, it’s been in the last 2 that they’ve seen a big surge of business. The majority of their clientele are tourists, even if during the lunch hours their patrons consist primarily of locals.
Their most popular dish is the same as their specialty: Pasta Bolognese (a.k.a. pasta al ragu).
What makes this place particularly unique apart from other restaurants in the area, is that they have a canal right behind them. With a view like that, who wouldn’t want to miss out on a little piece of Venice while in Bologna?
And while this place really does cater primarily to the fantasy of any tourist dreaming about Italy – it’s fun. The vibe is “at home” while still being in a stereotypically Italian restaurant. Besides, the customers are enjoying themselves and so are the staff. A great reason to stop in!

Another nice little touch that they have available to guests during summer months is outdoor seating. After all, what’s an Italian meal without dining al fresco?

They offer several local wines, the most common in Bologna being San Giovese, a red wine I had the pleasure of drinking a handful of times while in the city. But if you’re going to order anything here, make sure it’s that chocolate cake. I know, I already said that. But it bears repeating…

Their classic dishes of Emilia-Romagna include lasagna, and if you’re like me, you’ll want to try their patate al forno (“baked potatoes” – which are always roasted in the oven with rosemary). But you cannot leave until you try their chocolate cake, a specific type which is native to Bologna. Also known as “tenerina cake” it is a must when in Bologna, and most especially here at Il Portico!

So what are you waiting for? Immerse yourself in the center of one of Italy’s most influential and famous cities, by dining at a typical Bolognese restaurant. Just make sure that when you do, you let them know that Lisa sent you!
