Café de la Paix – Bologna, Italy

In 2003 Café de la Paix was born, and in 2007 the current owner, Francesco took it over.

Since then, they have had a successful 11 years catering to anyone and everyone who wishes to frequent their establishment.  With a clear stance in wanting to do their part to help the planet, they have made some changes in the past few years to do the best they can in that area. Almost everything they offer their guests is biological, and they strive to keep it that way. They maintain an environmentally-friendly atmosphere as well. From the products they distribute being eco-friendly (e.g. drinking glasses), to their waste being recycled, they clearly make a strong effort.

Another nice thing about Café  de la Paix is that they hire people who have fallen on hard times to help encourage them and give them a better chance at life. We like that.  Including those struggling, they lend a hand to legal immigrants and foreigners, mostly from Africa, who are looking for work in Italy.

So they are nice, generous people, and they have “peace” in their name. But what about the grub? Any good?

The owner tells me they have a selection of excellent wines, and I can confirm this fat. While there, the owner gave me a bottle of Chianti, and in the words of Chandler Bing, “Oh. My. God.” It’s never safe to leave me all alone with a bottle of wine – especially not a wine that good. The Chianti I had was some of the best I had while in Bologna.  The cafe has pulled no stops in choosing the types they carry, as from the looks of the list, they’re all good.

Not only did they have some of the best wine in the city, but they also have an apperitivo very particular to Italy in general. While most bars/cafes focus on serving more fattening apperitivo (chips, pizza, mini-pannini), here they serve grilled vegetables, different types of rices, and very little meat. They offer various cheeses and of course, my favorite, patate al forno.

And if it’s not wine or apperitivo you’re interested in, make sure to stop in on any given morning when the aroma of fresh coffee is brewing from ‘La Paix’.  They also offer pastries, and cheesecake. What? I didn’t mention the cheeecake? I must have had an embolism. That cheesecake was probably the best I had while in Bologna. Do order that if nothing else. Well, and of course, the Chianti.

The atmosphere is chic and funky, giving it that underground Parisian feel that you know you’ll love. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the prices are low! Do drop in if you’re wanting something casual and easy.  When you stop in though, make sure to tell them Lisa sent you!
