Starting Strong
Less than a year ago, My Thai opened its doors to the public. And before you think what I did, no. It’s not named after the drink. Although I thought a great marketing idea for them would be to have little cocktails waiting for clients after their treatments.
No, instead My Thai is the home of a classic Thai massage center. The little Thai woman named Daow and her Italian husband Matteo decided to open the shop together. With the hope of exposing Bologna to the Thai way of massage they’ve had a good start with things. After taking a year long course in Thailand, Daow was licensed, willing and able to jump full force into massaging people Thai-style.
The business has done well since they opened less than a year ago, with clients of all sorts of nationalities. Not just Italians. Catering not just to local Bolognese folk, they treat foreigners, tourists and Italians from other cities as well.
The massage center itself is a very calm and relaxing environment. Not just because it’s quiet with wonderful calming music, but also because of the tone in which the staff speak. It makes you drowsy from the time you arrive until you leave.
And not only do they have comfortable beds during your treatment, but they also have a shower available for you for after you’re finished, if you need or want one. Don’t worry about towels either. They’ve got you covered.
My Thai Experience
I went to My Thai for a treatment one day and, before I say more, it was my first time getting a Thai massage. So, for those of you who’ve had one before, you’ll know why I’m pausing a couple of beats here before I go on…
Now that you’ve seen the torture I was involved in for an hour, I’ll move forward with the reasons why you should visit My Thai.
Let’s set aside for a moment that after only ten minutes with my masseuse, the notion that I was at all flexible was thrown clear out the window. Instead, let’s focus on the good that came from that massage. For one, my body felt really loose afterward. Which surprised me since I was so tense during the massage. The stretching did my body good, and I could feel it even days afterward. Which again, really surprised me, but in a good way. Daow could not have been sweeter before, during and after the massage. She was more than happy to participate in the video. Not only that, but was also a good sport when I would make jokes about the acrobatic positions she would continually put me in.
And lest we not forget the obvious fact that while Daow is tiny, she has the strength of a lumberjack. The woman could lift me, pull me, throw me… it was quite surreal. And while it’s not a massage that I would normally seek out, it’s certainly something I would recommend to other people if they’re into that sort of thing.
Cost & Services
The prices are average for this type of a massage. A classic full body (which includes the reflexology foot massage), which is what I chose, is 90 Euro for 90 minutes. Considering this woman has to do quite a bit of exercise during that whole time, I would say you’re getting your money’s worth. Plus, you’re not naked like most massages require you to be. And it’s not to say that there aren’t relaxing moments in the massage. When I wasn’t screaming, there were times when I felt very tranquil from the way she worked.
The other services that they provide at My Thai are a 30-minute reflexology, and a more relaxing Thai massage with oil. The massage which I chose involved much more stretching, while the oil massage involves more rubbing. However, some clients request a lot of force be used when performing the massage with oil. The most popular treatment at the center is the full body classic Thai massage, which is what you see in the video. Though I’d like to hope that the other clients are a bit more limber than I was.
