Cannula Restaurant – Thessaloniki, Greece

Cannula Restaurant brings Greek fare in the most traditional way…but at the lowest cost you’ll find in town.

While it may not be the biggest restaurant at which you’ll ever dine, or the fanciest, Cannula has a lot going for it.  Aside from the fact that their food is delicious and full of amazing flavors, their staff and employers have a lot of heart – and it shows. Not just from the personal touch that the servers and cooks have with the way they treat their customers, but also in the way the bosses treat their employees.
While it may be a bit of a cliche that restaurant staff consider their team to be more like family rather than co-workers, in this case one cook tells me, it’s a fact.  And that’s always good to hear at any business.

The ambiance is very laid-back and come as you are.  Clientele from all incomes can afford to eat here.  This is also a really great motive for coming in.  Because of the Greek economy, it’s been very difficult for many families to be able to afford to eat out. So what Cannula has done, is offered two portion sizes of each dish on their menu.  Choosing the smaller portions (which I did), is still allowing you to have a generous amount of the dish and get to taste some fantastic traditional cuisine.  And if you can afford to pay for the larger portion (which is still very reasonable in price) or are just that hungry, do it. Because the food is worth it.

Their specialty dish also just happens to be my favorite thing on the menu.  Beef cooked in red wine sauce served with eggplant puree. Not convinced that it’s the best? It’s not just my favorite thing but it’s also the most popular dish on the menu.  Consensus clearly rules.

Cannula also prides themselves not only on keeping the prices low, but the quality high. They don’t just present their customers with the cheapest cut of meat to save on cost, but they purchase the high-end meats, and still keep their prices low. Perhaps this is why they are always so busy.

And while the summer months bring them a majority of foreign guests, the rest of the year, Cannula is mostly frequented by locals in Thessaloniki. This means you are eating at one of the favorite spots of the Thessalonians. I know, I think that’s pretty cool too.

Another good reason to visit Cannula is to check out their live music, which is something that they have fairly often at the establishment. I know that makes me interested in going back, for sure!

So when you stop in to Cannula to have that kebab, or delicious Greek salad, remember to tell them that Lisa sent you!
