Green Velvet Café – Thessaloniki, Greece

“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”

“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.

“I don’t much care where—” said Alice.

“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go.”

Get Lost in Wonderland

Have you ever wanted to lose yourself in the same Wonderland that Alice found herself in? I know I have! Perhaps that’s why I travel so much, the world is sort of like a wonderland to me. And, the fact that the classic 1960s Disney film was always my favorite as a child, could quite possibly have influenced my insatiable desire for exploration as an adult. That all having been said, you can imagine that I was positively tickled pink when I accidentally stumbled upon this gem of a cafe in the heart of Thessaloniki.

Much to my delighted surprise, the cafe was not only covered from floor to ceiling (quite literally) in an Alice in Wonderland theme, but they also had really delicious items on their menu as well. Almost like being a part of the Mad Hatter’s tea party, even right down to the antique China that they serve their guests, you feel like you are immersed in a real life wonderland. I was as giddy as a little girl.  Because, I’m not a weed! I’m a little girl! But I’m getting off the subject…a bit…

The Green Velvet Café opened its doors to Thessalonians just over a year ago in March of 2018, and to great success.  Some of what the cafe has going for it, is not just the fantastical decor, but also the general vibe.  While cafes aren’t usually geared toward children, in this case kids enjoy joining adults at the coffee shop more than usual. And who wouldn’t want to come here? With the ambiance as fun for adults as it is for children, there are also some delicious cakes, cookies and specialty hot chocolates that everyone can enjoy. My personal favorites were the traditional chocolate cake and the white hot chocolate with cranberry. Yum.

But this is just the tip of the iceberg.  You can also get some red velvet cake, which is what the cafe is most known for.  Too bad they were out the day I was there. Shucks. A good excuse to go back I suppose!

And while they do have cocktails in the evening that they serve, it’s their coffee and pastries that they’re most known for.  Their prices are fair and their hospitality terrific. Perhaps you’d like to purchase a “Drink me” bottle of soda pop while you’re there? Think of it as a souvenir from Wonderland.

Though their cakes are yummy and their drinks just as tasty, it’s really the atmosphere that will draw you in and keep you beaming with childlike wonderment. Yes, wonderment. Wonderment in Wonderland.

And make sure when you stop in to the Green Velvet Café you let them know Lisa sent you!
