Blé Restaurant and Café – Thessaloniki, Greece

Whatever you want, Blé has it!

In August of 2011 an ambitious proprietor of already several well-established businesses in Thessaloniki, decided to open what is now known as Blé.  Not exactly a restaurant, but not exactly a café, Blé is something in between.  And all the food they offer is beyond what any restaurant or café (or both combined) could ever offer.

The food at Blé is never ending. And I mean that in a good way.  If you’re in Thessaloniki and you’re hungry, there are lots of places to find good food. But only Blé can satisfy your stomach in that special way.  And in any way you like, as their variety is unlimited.  Want some focaccia? Done.  Want some sourdough bread? Or how about baguette bread? Wheat bread? Or what about any kind of bread? They have it.  Multiple choices of sandwiches? They have it.  Hot foods like chicken, pork and roasted potatoes? Yes, they’ve got it.  Cold salads and seafood? Yeah, definitely try that too.  But their pièce de résistance is most definitely their pastry bar.

With limiltess choices, your sweet tooth will begin to feel sore before you’ve even ordered.  And with a talented chef behind the scenes, the cuisine is all international.  Blé focuses primarily on French, Italian and of course, traditional Greek dishes. All of which are a must to try!

And if you’re not hungry, then stop over at their coffee bar, where their baristas will prepare you some Greek and international blends.  Want to take some beans home with you? No problem. They ground the beans of your choice right in front of you to take home, and apparently their espresso is particularly impressive.  And chocolate? Yes, not surprisingly they have a ton of that too, and maybe, just maybe, that’s even better than the food. But it’s really hard to choose.

Don’t forget the ice cream bar, either. Come on, are you really surprised at this point? According to the staff, the ice cream is actually their most popular item at the establishment. Not only is it good, but the corner that dedicated to it is also very cool.

The staff is the best at Blé. Hard workers they are, always smiling and friendly, they will assist you in every capacity, even helping you carry your tray to the table if you have too much in your hands…eh hem, like moi.

Blé has a concept based on holistics. Meaning, they serve only all natural and fresh ingredients to their clients, and I for one appreciate that.  Knowing that you’re getting the highest quality of anything and everything when you’re there puts you more at ease, and that’s a comfort to any customer.

Something that really suggests good success and the quality of what they’re selling is their repeat business. The majority of their clientele are locals to the city, with growth of tourists each year. Their regular customers who come every day is a testament to how good they are, and you might even throw me in that category as well. Given that I had to come back a second time while I was in town, it proves that I fell in love with their food – and also, I didn’t have a big enough waistband to fit everything the first time around.

The most interesting thing about Blé (aside from their massive amounts of food) is that they have a 12 meter-high oven. They believe this to be the tallest oven in the whole world! Wow!

My favorite thing at Blé? Are you really going to make me choose? If you’re going to force me to say something, then definitely don’t leave the restaurant without trying their pork in mustard sauce. This is something I still think about, even weeks after having eaten there. It’s one of the most delicious things I’ve ever had. And if you’re looking for one of the greatest desserts in all of Europe, then order their Double Belgian Chocolate pastry. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

Because this is cafeteria style dining, the prices go by weight. So, think of Safeway’s deli department. Except, you’re in Europe. And this is slightly more chic. Okay, more than slightly.  Outdoor seating is available, and in case they are full up both inside and out, they actually have an annexed room where I sat.  A bit more private, certianly more quiet, but most importantly, comfortable seating.

Now that you know where all the food is kept in Greece, make sure to stop in while you’re in Thessaloniki, and tell them Lisa sent you!
