Casa do Terreiro do Poço – Borba, Portugal

In the mood to stay at a manor dating back to the 17th century? How about relaxing by a private pool surrounded by unique architecture and massive palm trees? Indulge in some delicious local sausages and fresh squeezed orange juice for breakfast? If all of this sounds like it’s up your alley, then you might want to head to the tiny village of Borba.  Here, you will find Casa do Terreiro do Poço, with a lot more than what you might be expecting!

João, the owner, has been welcoming guests to his property ever since he purchased it back in 2005.  A retired lawyer, he decided to go into hospitality, as he loves hosting people.  Having lived in Lisbon for many years, he decided to move back to his native region of Alentejo, and spend time and money renovating a project that was near and dear to his heart.

For the past 14 years, he has welcomed tourists from far and wide, including French, Dutch, German and even Canadian guests. And while he sees more foreigners in the summer months rather than in the fall and winter, his biggest clientele is from Spain. Not surprising, since Alentejo is so close to Spain’s border.

And speaking of close proximity, a great selling point João makes to his guests, is how easily accessible a lot of well-known and important things in the region are to his property.  For example, for those who want to explore the charming little town of Évora, Casa do Terreiro do Poço is just a half hour drive.  The town of Estremoz is only 10 minutes away, and don’t forget about the wineries all over the region.  A great deal of travelers coming to Alentejo go there specifically to try the famous wine, and the unique gastronomy that is prepared there. And while it’s not the most important thing to do in Alentejo, wine tasting is definitely a must while there.  João is happy to organize different adventures for his guests who are keen on seeking out fun and exciting places to visit while in the area.

A bed and breakfast type of accommodation, Casa do Terreiro do Poço offers its guests peace and tranquility in a completely noise-free atmosphere. With a large swimming pool, beautifully maintained grounds, the scenery at this property is well maintained and almost like a secret garden.

With very spacious rooms, each decorated and unique in their own right, the beds are comfortable, bathtubs stylish and large enough for two, some rooms even come with a mini-fridge. The decor is ornate, and well-designed, with chandeliers, beautiful views of the garden area, and streets of Borba.

The breakfasts are uniquely tailored to meet your needs, the owner serving you fresh eggs to order, and the best squeezed orange juice in town. His wife will make sure your room is in order each and every morning while you’re enjoying your breakfast, and she might even tell you about the “ghost” at the manor!

And if you need to do some work while you’re there, it’s literally the perfect place to do it. I spent a quiet three days at the guesthouse, working on my computer.  I had fast WiFi, had plenty of outlets in my room to plug in all of my electronic equipment and mostly enjoyed the peace and quiet all around me.

But if you really want to make the most of your stay at Casa do Terreiro do Poço, make sure to lay out by the pool and work on your Portuguese tan. That was my favorite part of it all!

With all of this and more, it’s clear the next time you’re in Borba, you’ll probably be booking your night’s stay at Casa do Terreiro do Poço.  And when you do, make sure to let them know that Lisa sent you!
