The Best Hidden Gem

I am always looking for a great hidden gem. Something that I’m not expecting, and then like a bolt of lightning it surprises me – but in a good way. Because I really wouldn’t want to be struck by lightning. I found that lightning bolt at the Évora Inn Guesthouse. With the most incredible view you could ask for, the best accommodation a small amount of money can buy, and the kindest and friendliest staff in all of Portugal, Évora Inn is indeed a hidden gem.

The owner of Évora Inn, Diana, bought the business 7 years ago, even if the guesthouse started 4 years before that. Since then, she and her partner Isidro have made the place into the great experience that it is.

There may be many other hotels and guesthouses in town, but there’s no place better in my opinion when you’re on a budget and want an incredible and unforgettable experience. With no elevator in the building, this could quite possibly be the only negative that you will assign the guesthouse while you’re staying there. And even with those four flights of stairs to get yourself up, you’ll probably forget them by the time you walk out onto your glorious terrace. An experience like this only comes along once in a while, and I was fortunate to have it for 2 and a half days while I was in the beautiful and enchanting town of Évora.

Comfort & Class

While there is only one room with a view like I had, there are other rooms on offer at the guesthouse. However, mine was the newest addition to the abode, with newly renovated cabinets, bathroom and kitchen facilities, and of course an outdoor tub. What’s that, you ask? An outdoor tub? No, it’s not a Jacuzzi. Instead, it’s a plastic (yes, plastic) bathtub which is right there on the large terrace. Enjoy soaking in it on the rooftop (which is completely private and out of eyesight from anyone in the square the terrace looks down upon).

With the most comfortable bed in town, the furniture throughout the entire establishment is funky but chic. Lighting and style are the best part of the room though, with a cozy but spacious feel throughout the entire apartment, you will feel relaxed, at home and classy while staying here.

Prices are extremely fair at the guesthouse, and included in your stay you will also receive a very light, but very good breakfast. With coffee, juice, jams, bread, hams and fruit, they take care of you from morning til night. And speaking of night time care – did I mention the complimentary wine? Oh, yes. Upon arrival you’re shown where to help yourself to the most delicious port wine on the planet. And when I say help yourself, that’s actually what they tell you to do. Anytime and as much as you want, the wine is limitless. I recommend taking a glass up to your room and sipping it while relaxing in your bathtub in the evening with the city lights surrounding you. The perfect end to a beautiful evening in the magical town of Évora.

And last but not least, the staff. From the owners to the employees, there is not a soul at the guesthouse who isn’t as friendly as you can imagine. With big smiles all the time, quiet tones and warm welcomes and goodbyes, they are always going out of their way to make your stay as comfortable, relaxed and unforgettable as they can make it.
