Past to Present
It all began in 1974. One of the oldest hotels in the Algarve, the hotel is not only classy, but historical as well. Hotel Carvoeiro Plaza is named not only for the town, but also for the square where it’s located. While the hotel may have its charms dating back more than 40 years, it wasn’t until 2004 that it had its first renovations. Boasting 54 rooms in total, Hotel Carvoeiro Plaza has seen changes similar to this, but also bigger ones.
Last year marked the beginning of the hotel’s new management and ownership. Since then, the quality of the hotel has risen dramatically and so has their clientele.
Exciting Changes
An important change that has occurred during this time has been 12 of the 54 rooms being renovated. Those 12 rooms have not only been done up in style, but they are also the gems of the hotel’s collection. 9 of these beautiful guestrooms look over the magnificent Atlantic, while 3 of them overlook the beautiful garden area. All located on the top floor, these are the best rooms to rent when staying at, what I like to refer to as, ‘The Plaza’.
The Guests
The clientele at Hotel Plaza Carvoeiro is primarily foreign all year round. With the Portuguese coming almost exclusively on weekends, or during holidays, over 60% of the hotel’s guests are from abroad. The Brits encompassing a vast swatch of that percentage, the rest are primarily from France, Spain Germany and Holland. And while they don’t have many Americans coming to their hotel, they would very much like to more of us!
When you’re at Hotel Carvoeiro Plaza, you’re getting more than just service. You’re getting exceptional service. The hotel offers great attention to detail, high standards and quality, and, as the operations manager throws in, “We have 360 days of sunshine.” So, you really can’t beat the weather they offer either!
What You Get at Hotel Carvoeiro Plaza
It’s the little details that really make Hotel Carvoeiro Plaza special. I’m a sucker for fresh orange juice in the morning. So it definitely made my day when I got to have some at breakfast each day.
The perfect way to start your day, in my opinion. How’s that buffet breakfast? Fantastic. You can sit yourself inside the grand dining room, or dine out in the courtyard. I would recommend the latter of the two options, which is where I sat each morning. With the sun shining, the beautiful decor all around you, you’re sure to feel relaxed even before you head to the pool or the beach that day.
The beds? Brand new, I was informed, the bed I had was literally the most comfortable thing I slept on the entire month I was in Portugal. If I’d had room in my suitcase upon check-out, I would have stuffed the mattress inside. But I also don’t steal, so I probably wouldn’t have done that, actually. Tempting…but no.
Transfers & Tours
The hotel not only provides transportation to and from the Faro airport which is not far from the hotel, but they also organize tours as well. Working with local tour companies around Carvoeiro, they will help you find the right tour for you not just in town, but throughout the entire Algarve. Stretching as far as Lagos, they will try to fit your needs and desires as best as possible, ensuring that your stay is just as dream-like as you had imagined before arriving.
I was given such an experience, by getting to go on an excursion with Carvoeiro Tours. A tour boat company, they took me around the cliffs and caves of the area, and it was sincerely one of the highlights of my trip!
And, I must make mention of the transfer company that they set me up with. It was such a lifesaver. Without going into a lot of detail, the driver saved me. Instead of having to wait all day at the train station where he originally took me, he drove me to another town. If it had not been for this savior of a driver, I might not have made my connection. For this alone they deserve applause and thanks. Also, their van was extremely comfortable to boot. A luxurious Mercedes, I was driven around the Algarve at 6:30 in the morning in style. But Wait…There’s More!
If it’s poolside snacks and cocktails you want, then you got it! With a list of delicious items on their snack menu at the lobby bar/poolside area, you’re sure to find something to tide you over until dinner time. The “snacks” would be more appropriately referred to as “lunch” as they are very plentiful, very filling and very tasty!
The cocktails aren’t too shabby either. While you’re in no danger of being caught in the rain in Carvoeiro, I would still nonetheless highly recommend their Piña Coladas. What you do after midnight is your business.
That outdoor pool area is worth checking out too. Open May – September you are welcome to have your snacks and cocktails out there or in the lobby area where they have comfortable resting chairs and a TV.
Personalized check-in is also something they proudly offer at the hotel. Upon check-in, guests are told about the town of Carvoeiro, the sights to see and the best restaurants where they can dine.
