Have you ever wondered what it would be like to walk on the moon? Well, I didn’t walk on the moon, but it kind of, sort of looked like what I imagined that would look like. Or at least, parts of it.
No, instead, I got to visit the salt pan of Margherita di Savoia, a sleepy little town in the southern part of Italy, most specifically in the region of Puglia.
The salt pan, which has been naturally producing salt farther back than most people can clearly pin point, is now operated by Atisale SpA.
The salt pan is quite the impressive and exciting spot to check out. The managers of the site showed me around, first by car and then on foot, explaining in great deal how it all started, the manufacturing process and all the in betweens. I got to sit on the salt, taste it and walk around on it. Again, not exactly the moon – but it felt like the closest thing I’ll ever get to that.

In general, this is a unique opportunity that no one should miss while in Puglia. Just make sure that when you do schedule your tour, you let them know Lisa sent you!
