Dallas Heritage Museum

Dallas Heritage Museum – Dallas, Texas

It’s not every day you can step into the past. But at Dallas Heritage Village Museum, you will feel like you’re doing just that!

Throughout my day while visiting the open-air museum, I felt like I was in Back to the Future III.  The Old West theme emanating from every square inch of the village was charming, and not a little bit exciting. The closest thing you will find these days to a time machine, they have everything set up to make you feel like you really have gone back in time.

With employees dressed up to look like they would have over a hundred years ago, the late 19th century costumes add a great deal to the entire ambiance that is the Dallas Heritage Village Museum.

All the buildings, from the bank, to the train station, to the local general store all have the appearance of the Old West. Step inside each of these establishments, among others, and talk with the “owners” who will give you a history lesson of what things were like back in the day, as you do your “shopping”.

Need something to drink? Why not visit the saloon, located right next door to the general store. There you can sit down and play some poker, talk to the barmaid, and have a tall foamy (fake) glass of beer to quench your thirst. After all, you’ve traveled a long way in time to get there, you’re bound to be thirsty!

If you make your way through the village, you might come across the quaintest chapel you’ve ever laid your eyes on. Like something out of a movie, walking up to the charming little while church, the sound of the breeze in your ears, the inside of the chapel is possibly just as cute as the outside. With wooden pews that really do like like they came out of the 1800s, the soft sound of peace envelopes you as you sit there, praying, thinking or taking photos while inside the structure.

The most realistic part of the tour though might be when you are visiting a farmer and his wife at their stead. Getting to see the crops in the field, but then also the inside of their house is something unforgettable. Details right down to the nth degree, you can see books in the living room, a fire just for your benefit on those cold winter mornings, chickens walking here and there and the farmer’s wife at her weaving station creating her latest ball of yarn to make some clothes.

And if it’s an actual tour you’re interested in, then you might want to take advantage of the guide who will show you around the village’s manor. Explaining the family history, how long the manor has been on site, and who actually purchased the land in order to create the museum that we have today.

Sit on the patio of the manor and rock back and forth on the white wicker chairs – and be totally southern. Grab some souvenirs out of the gift shop before you leave to commemorate your visit. But for sure, don’t miss out on the live band they have on specific days of the week at the museum! Whatever you decide to do, make sure that you do check out Dallas Heritage Village while in the great state of Texas! You won’t regret the visit.  A perfect place to bring the whole family, it’s educational, fun and an important part of our American history.

Just make sure that when you do visit,  you let them know Lisa sent you!
