Serendipity Salon – Terre Haute, Indiana

Getting your hair done at Serendipity Salon might not just be a coincidence – it might just be serendipitous!

Get ready to have an amazing hair style that you’re going to be in love with for a long time after they do your do. At Serendipity Salon anything is possible, and miracles will certainly be apart of the equation.

When I arrived at Serendipity Salon one afternoon, I was badly in need of a do-over. It had literally been about 4 months since anyone had cut or styled my hair. In such a desperate state and so frustrated with my split-ends which had been causing me nothing but tragic grief for months, I went as far as cutting my own hair one evening. With manicure scissors.

So when I went to Serendipity I was looking for some serious help. And wow, did I get more than what I had anticipated. Not only did my hair stylist Maddie change my look completely, she made me feel like a new woman with the color, bailage and the cut that she gave me. And still, a whole month later, I’m loving my hair and can’t believe I never tried it like this before.

Her genius hands turned those drab locks of mine into a radiant gold mine. Pun intended.

It wasn’t by accident that I found this salon either – you may say it was, serendipitous. A friend of mine recommended them to me while I was in town for a few days, and as soon as I walked in, I knew this was the place for me.

The décor is the first thing that pops out to anyone who is paying attention. An extrodinarily clever idea conceived by the owner, instead of your standard mirror and chair, clients can relax and feel like they’re being worked on like a (n almost) literal canvas.

With a boardroom-like, firm leather-pleaded chair to sit in, you are never uncomfortable. And starting ahead of you is yourself inside of a full-length mirror stationed on an easle.
Yes, an easle! So while you’re getting your hair done, you can feel like the work of art you’re about to become. An extrememly clever and fun idea that should not go unnoticed by anyone.

And while my friend was the one who brought the salon to my attention, she’s not the only one in Terre Haute who knows about Serendipity. The entire four hours that I was there the salon was slammed with clientele. Everyone busily running around, cutting, coloring and chatting – everyone in town seemed to know about and love Serendipity.

But how did a little hair salon in the historic downtown of Terre Haute get to be so popular?

Serendipity opened its doors in October of 2008. According to my hair stylist Maddie (who is also the salon’s marketing manager),

“Cheryl, the owner, chose the name because it’s definition. She was about to leave the industry to go back to school when someone came to her with the opportunity to open the business.” At 45, this isn’t Cheryl’s first time running a salon. Having managed several others in the past, she decided the move to run her own was good timing and a great idea. As she had been in the hair business for 27 years, and left college in her younger days to attend cosmetology school, it just made sense sticking to what she knew and loved.

Serendipity has a lot to offer, and it’s not limited to just hair. Though their list of services in that department is extensive. You can choose from getting a color, cut, style, formal style, bridal services, makeup, conditioning treatment, cezanne smoothing treatment, Brazilian blowout, tape-in hair extensions, and more. But that’s not all! Want to get some waxing done? I did. You can get facial waxing, eyebrow tinting, and even eyelash tinting while you’re there. And who wouldn’t want to extend their day of beauty to the face in addition to their hair?

The other great thing about Serendipity is that they specialize in detailed consults, personalized cuts and color applied with advanced techniques.

As an example, Maddie explained everything that she did for me while I was there.

“We did a color retouch with added dimension which was at a cost starting at $120; an eyebrow wax at $15 and a lip wax at $12.” She goes on by saying,

“We pride ourselves on offering personalized services and our care for customer experience.  As well as our attention to detail and passion for education to stay up to date on trends.”

And without a doubt, one of the best things they do here at Serendipity was something I got to experience first-hand. A relaxing scalp massage and hot towel treatment. Wow. This is offered to all guests and I must say, if you don’t come in for anything else, make sure you get your hair washed just for this reason. The massage and hot towel combo is really great and alone, worth a visit.

Though their prices are not below average or even the common medium, you’re getting what you pay for. The least expensive thing you will pay for here is a eyebrow and eyelash tint which is $15. While the most expensive service is their Brazilian blowout or their American wave which is between $250-350. But your hair will undoubtedly look amazing when you walk out the door – and really, that’s why you’re there to begin with.

Serendipity also uses specific name brand products, such as Eufora.  I went home with some of this product myself and can tell you that my hair has maybe never felt so smooth as when I left the salon that day. It deeply saddened me that I had to wash it at some point. But then again, I knew I had some of that product to save the day when I needed to dry it myself at home.

But specifically I went home with Eufora Beautifying Elixirs leave-in repair treatment to be used on wet hair as a leave in conditioner to repair the hair from the inside out. This product also works as a heat protectant. And Arrojo Defrizz serum to be used on either wet or dry hair. This serum adds shine while controlling frizz.

Maddie is a talent herself. While she’s a mere 21 years old, she’s already got a lot of skills, and not just in the field of hair. Cheryl tells me she has quite the head for business, and how pleased and proud of her she is, having made her marketing manager of the salon.

“I have been doing hair professionally for 3 years.  In middle and elementary school I always did other people’s hair,” Maddie smiles with a blush as she dries my hair. Yes, she is quite resourceful with a pair  of scissors and a baliage brush, but her touch is the most relaxing you will ever experience. Her soothing voice, delicate touch and soft way about her in general makes the experience in her chair at Serendipity all the more relaxing and enjoyable.

As a gift/souvenir, she gives each of her clients a cute little bag of goodies before walking out the door, and I got one too. A little pin which reads, “Maddie did it”, a homemade scrunchie made by Maddie herself, and a business card, all bound together in a see-through pouch, it’s a nice little touch to an already fabulous experience.

All in all the experience, atmosphere and all around end results are all ones I would like to do over again. There’s nothing better than feeling like a new woman (and of course in a good way) when you leave a beauty salon. And that’s exactly how you’ll feel when you walk out of Serendipity Salon.  Just make sure that when you book your next appointment, you let them know Lisa sent you!
