Tandoor Fine Indian Cuisine – Schererville, Indiana

If you’re like me and can’t get enough of the spicy delight of Indian cuisine, then you will most definitely want to check out Tandoor in Schererville. The best Indian spot in Northwest Indiana – and quite possibly in the Midwest  – Tandoor will leave you feeling incredibly satisfied in all aspects of restaurant dining.

Tandoor is one of those definite hidden gems in the rough. You wouldn’t think of Schererville, Indiana having a place like this in its midst, but luckily enough it does.

Owners Arjun Ahuja and Vyomesh Patel, originally from New Delhi and Gujarat, India respectively, started the business over 10 years ago. To the pleasant surprise of many a local in the area, the restaurant offers more than just a standard Indian menu. They also have lunch buffet served throughout the week.

Customers can enjoy their plentiful portions of all you can eat Indian food, any day of the week. Not only can they indulge in the most delicious Indian fare, but you can do it in a peaceful and serene setting.

The restaurant itself boasts an Indian themed décor – which should be met with no surprise – and the wait staff all have their cultural charms to bring alongside every table they serve. The spacious setting offers customers an ambiance that is one unmatched by any other in the area, and while the prices are not the highest in town – the quality is.

The standard of food here at Tandoor is one of the best you will find in all of Northwest Indiana. Nothing cheap, frozen, or imposter-like is to be found here. You will be refreshed knowing that it was money well spent when you leave – and your stomachs will be more than satisfied.

While the portions may seem small, they are deceptively so. No matter how many times I’ve been to Tandoor I always think I’m going to be hungry afterward – and yet I can’t even finish the entire portions they bring out. The food is filling, beyond delicious and worth every penny spent here.

My recommendations though are to stick with entrees, and by far and away any chicken dish you order will blow your mind.

And while their “Chicken Tikka Masala” might be one of their most popular dishes, my most favorite thing here is their “Chicken Saag”. Their garlic naan is a must, their simple rice is pretty terrific, and basically I could go on and on about their Chicken Korma, their Chicken Kashmire and a whole bevy of other dishes – but I think you get it. I’m in love with this restaurant’s food.

The vegetarian and vegan selections are just as tasty, but anything with chicken here is definitely the way to go.

Needless to say, Tandoor has been my favorite go-to spot for dining out since living in greater Northwest Indiana.

Where does the name come from, you might ask? According to the manager, Oshima,

“’Tandoor’ is a type of ‘clay oven’ that is used originally in Northern India. The owners named the restaurant after this because we mostly work with tandoors, like Naan, or other grilled items. So we chose ‘Tandoor’ as the name, as it’s the hardest and most important thing that we use in the restaurant.”

And great news for people like me, and others who are big fans of the restaurant, while they don’t presently own and/or operate any other restaurants, the owners are working on opening more in the near future.

With regular seen customers (like myself) and plenty of new-timers, Oshima goes on to say,

“Our customer satisfaction needs are amazing. We have our buffet every day, this way customers can try almost everything at a cheaper rate.”  And indeed, this is an excellent way to gain new customers, so that they can almost sample just about everything worthwhile on the menu, before committing to one large portion.

The other great thing about Tandoor is their spice levels. I’m personally not able to eat anything too hot – or anything hot, period – so it’s awfully convenient that I can choose my dishes to be made at a mild level, and any fellow patrons who are with me who can handle their spice can choose to make it as spicy as possibly conceivable. And, don’t worry about losing flavor if it’s a little more mild. Oshima tells me,

“We make  our dishes at the spice level of our customers’ needs. We make every dish by our Indian style recipes to give more taste to it. We also have vegan and non vegan dishes. As per customers’ needs, the meals are prepared.”

As she said before, customer satisfaction is very clearly a top priority for them. Making sure the customer is as happy with their order as possible is generally not a problem, considering they cater to just about every need they may have. Which makes it super easy on anyone dining here.

So what are you waiting for? Tandoor: Fine Indian Cuisine is only about an hour from Chicago and on the main highway of Schererville, Indiana. You can’t miss it, and nor do you want to. Tandoor is where it’s at, and where I was just a few weeks ago. Check out the video below to see all the amazing food I ordered (and yes, ate).

You definitely need to stop in at Tandoor the next time you’re in the Midwest – and most specifically the greater Chicago/Northwest Indiana area. Just make sure that when you do pop in, you let them know Lisa sent you!
